The baby girl had died instantly when the teenage thief’s first bullet penetrated Annie’s abdomen. Annie struggled to hold on to her own life for three more days, and then simply stopped breathing while Josh was holding her hand and talking to her. When she died, a beeper sounded and a large green question mark appeared on the screen above her bed. Two nurses and a doctor hurried Josh and his mother from the room and worked for twenty minutes to bring Annie back, but failed. It was ten days before Christmas.

Josh and Grace drove back to the house in silence, and while Grace went inside, Josh locked the car and walked up the driveway to straighten the mailbox. It hadn’t been quite right since the last time Annie backed over it. He knelt down to check the wooden post and saw it needed fresh concrete. Josh shoved the post in as deep as he could with his bare hands, then tried to stand up. When his legs went weak, he collapsed on his knees in the damp earth, weeping helplessly. Inside the house, a heartbroken Grace heard the wrenching sounds of her son’s grief, but she knew not to go to him. Like his father before him, Josh would do his mourning alone. Grace also knew that after tonight, she would never see him cry again.

She sat on the couch by the front window and watched until his shoulders stopped heaving, and after a while, saw him get to his feet and walk stiffly to the garage. Soon, she heard the faucet running at the side of the house. In the freezing weather and almost total darkness, Josh was mixing cement.

Three months later, Josh’s truck was traveling on a narrow county road when it careered off a bridge, overturned and came to rest in a deep, half-frozen creek ten miles from town. The state troopers who dragged him from the stream, barely alive, his skull fractured, were puzzled how an excellent driver like Josh Lundgren, cold sober and in broad daylight, could have misjudged a turn he’d made almost every day of his adult life.
